I use coconut oil for our skin instead of lotion since it absorbs rather quickly and moisturizes more effectively and for a much longer period of time - plus it's great for kids with sensitive skin.
I have used this is a mask for my hair. Very simple, I used about three small scoops, I imagine similar to 3 tbsp, of coconut oil and started at the ends, worked my way up but avoided the scalp area. Left on my hair for twenty minutes, washed, conditioned and styled as usual and my hair looked so great that I received lots of compliments on my 'new haircut'. That's how healthy it looked. And you can do this once a month, if needed that often.
I've recently switched to using a mix of coconut oil and a little baking soda to use as a 'face wash' instead of soap which can strip the oils. The coconut oil naturally cleanses the face without stripping moisture (which many times can lead to additional breakouts). All you need is about a quarter-sized amount of coconut oil (it will warm and liquify in your hands) and a very little bit of baking soda, mix together and then apply to your face in a circular motion. Rinse with warm water (and a towel if you desire), then pat dry. No need for anything else, toners, extra moisturizers, etc. So far, I feel that my skins looks better, brighter and it definitely feels softer!
I've also used coconut oil when making homemade 'vaporub'. Simply use the coconut oil as a base, add a few drops of lavender essential oil (I use Lavandin because it has some additional anti-bacterial properties) and a few drops of chamomile essential oil, if desired. Rub on the bottoms of feet, chest, back, under the nose in the same manner that you would vaporub - but it's all natural and better for you and your kiddos! I always buy my essential oils from Sprouts, they have so many to choose from!
These are only some of the ways that I've implemented using coconut oil in our home, but check out Wellness Mama's website and her list of 101 Uses for Coconut Oil! It seriously can be used for just about anything!
