First, I follow SparkPeople and they have a new challenge in May, which simply put is to get one mile of some sort of cardio in every single day. That sounds easy enough, especially considering that when I run it's usually 3-4 miles at a time! But it doesn't have to be just running! It can be any type of cardio: bicycling, swimming, stairstepper, ellipticals, kayaking/canoeing, etc. Anything!
Plus, at my job, we are forming teams to compete in an Amazing Race-inspired program, with the teams running over a period of eight weeks to see who can get to Vegas first! Not physically running from Dallas to Vegas, but accumulating our total miles ran per team to see who makes it first! I'm a bit competitive, so if it was up to me, I'd be running several miles every. single. day. But that would totally burn me out.
Instead, what my plan to do is 1) to get a lot of miles for my work team, so I will be running four times per week at 3-4 miles each time. Let's do the math, if I do four miles each time I run, 4 x 4 = 16 miles per week; 16 x 8 = 128 miles! While that wouldn't get me out of the state of Texas (do you KNOW how big Texas is?!!), it would get us almost 10% of the way there! Plus, on the days that I'm not running, I can definitely enjoy some low-stress laps at the pool that would equal one mile worth of swimming! So I will be getting the best of both challenges, by getting at least one mile per day for SparkPeople's challenge and by helping my teammates at work on our challenge!
Now, that's seriously a lot of cardio - but I can't forget strength training! Strength training is uber-important, since muscle burns the most calories. So, I'm super-stoked because I recently purchased some kettlebells to keep at home (slowly taking over the garage and converting it to a workout space! But don't tell my husband! lol) so I can do my kettlebell routine whenever I want! Huge plus! Love the kettlebells! Plus, I have a quick office workout that I found found here and uses no weights or special equipment, that I can do at work! I probably am a little crazy and trying to do too much, but I am serious about overhauling my routine with health and fitness front and center on my mind!
