I can recount to you in vivid detail where I was, what I was doing the morning of September 11, 2001, down to the clothes I was wearing. I can recount the sheer horror of what I was watching on TV, hearing reported on the news. I remember going to my Spanish class, and in our classroom we all cried, everyone on edge and nervous. I remember staying near to our radios, our TVs, our computers so that we could stay up to date, around the clock. I remember mourning and grieving with family, neighbors, our nation. Living in DFW with several large and international airports, I remember how eerie it was to not see any planes in the sky for weeks, especially when it is not unusual to see three or more planes in the sky at any given time.
I remember the amount of outpouring and support locally, nationally and internationally. I remember how everyone rallied together to support those immediately affected, and I remember being in Dallas wishing I was in New York so I could help. I remember feeling helpless because we were so far away, physically, but not mentally or spiritually. I remember watching the news every day hoping that more survivors were found.
I remember the sacrifices of the first responders, who were doing everything they can to aid as many people as possible. I remember the sacrifices of our military men and women, who have fought or continue to fight, for freedom and against terrorism. I will always remember... and will never forget. Always in my thoughts and prayers...
